February 2020 saw our multi-borough drama project for young carers come to an end with a celebratory showcase at The Other Palace. 34 young carers from Haringey, Hillingdon and Westminster came together to perform their own mini-plays. Young carers are young people who look after family members with long-term physical or mental health problems.
The young carers had a fantastic time showing their friends and family what they’d achieved over the course of 6 bespoke drama workshops. The stage was full of smiles as they performed with their newly-made friends – even when mistakes happened! One young person told us:
“I felt happy because we achieved it … I enjoyed the mistakes because people laughed with us, not at us!“
This project gave the young people the chance to meet other young carers and have time to play, express themselves and just feel like kids. One young person said she had learned “to be confident and never hide“, while another told us that they enjoyed “getting close with new people, expressing myself [and] having fun with friends.“
The young people had one wish in common: they all wanted the project to be longer!
